False-colour scanning electron micrographs showing changes in the appearance of cultured T- lymphocytes following infection with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV),the causative agent of AIDS. At top is a normal uninfected T-cell,the surface of which forms long irregular microvilli. At bottom is a T-cell infected with HIV; the microvilli are lost and replaced by rounded features. Small spherical budding virus particles are visible on the cell surface.
