Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing numerous AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) virus paticles external to the cytoplasm of an an infected T4 lymphocyte,a white blood cell. The virus particles (virions),named human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1),appear as small, roughly spherical objects with dark cores. Infection with HIV depletes the population of T4 cells & thus disables the immune system, rendering its victim liable to a number of fatal diseases. Two distinct forms of the AIDS virus are now recognised (1988),designated HIV-1 and HIV-2. Magnification: x81,000 at 10x8 inch size | |
