False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) virus particle (roughly spherical, coloured red) budding from the plasma membrane of an infected T4 lymphocyte,a white blood cell. AIDS disables the immune system, rendering its victim liable to a number of fatal infections. The virus (designated HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus) enters the T-cell where its genetic material (RNA) is translated into DNA to subvert the host cell's DNA into producing viral progeny, which ultimately destroy the T-cell.
