False-colour transmission electron micrograph of AIDS virus particles inside a stricken T4 lymphoc- yte,a white blood cell of the immune system. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) destroys T4 lymphocytes, rendering the victim liable to fatal secondary infections. The virus, designated HIV for Human Immunodeficiency Virus,is a retrovirus: its genetic program is held in RNA (red cores of virus spheres),translated into DNA inside the T4 cell,& infiltrates the cell's own DNA. Once activated, the viral DNA replicates & progeny bud from the cell wall, killing the host cell. Magnif- ication: x8800 at 35mm,x17,600 at 6x7cm size | |
