False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virions (virus particles) of the german measles (rubella) virus. Individual viruses have icosahedral capsid symmetry (20-40 nanometers in size) & are surrounded by an outer lipoprotein envelope which appears as paler shade of orange in the image. The capsid is the protein coat containing genetic information in the form of single-stranded RNA. The german measles virus belongs to the rubivirus genus of the Togaviridae virus family.
