False-colour scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) image of a platinum metal surface, image processed to provide a contour map. The image shows clusters of small mounds, each about thirty atoms (10 nanometers) in diameter by about 10 atoms (3 nanometers) high. Scanning tunnelling microscopy is based on quantum mechanical effects, recording the surface structure of a substance at the level of the individual atoms. Magnification: x300,000 at 35mm size. Image size: 1000 x 500 Angstrom Units | |
