Weevils being prepared for SEM study
Weevils (Eupholus sp.) about to be plated with a fine layer of gold to enable them to be studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). An SEM uses a fine beam of electrons to achieve high magnifications. As electrons have a smaller wavelength than visible light,the magnifications can be much higher than those attainable using a light microscope. When the electron beam interacts with the sample surface it causes the emission of other electrons,which are detected and used to build up an image. Samples are covered in gold to conduct away the electric charge on the electrons
