Neon lights. Two children standing in front of a display of neon lights. The display is enhanced by the use of mirrors. Neon lamps consist of glass tubes containing neon gas at a low pressure and two metal electrodes at either end. When a voltage is applied, the gas becomes ionised and begins to glow as it transmits a current between the electrodes. Pure neon has a red-orange glow. Different colours can be achieved by the addition of impurities such as argon or krypton. Neon lights are more efficient than carbon filament lamps | |
