Pasteur Institute. Engraving of the Pasteur Institute in Paris,France, during the 1890s,with patients of different nationalities waiting outside. The Institute was built using public subscriptions from around the world in honour of French microbiologist Louis Pasteur's work on vaccines for anthrax and rabies, and the technique of pasteurisation. It was opened on 14 November 1888 as a rabies inoculation clinic and a microbiology research centre. Pasteur remained its director until his death, working daily at his laboratory bench until he suffered a stroke in September 1895. The Institute remains one of the world's leading research establishments | |
