The Royal Institution is a scientific research centre whose aim is "to teach the application of science to the common purposes of life". It still achieves this through lectures and discussions. The Institution was founded in 1799 by Benjamin Thompson (1753-1814),later Count Rumford,and was given its charter by King George III in the following year. Thompson was a physicist who made pioneering studies of heat.
