James Dewey Watson (born 1928),American biochemist & co- discoverer of the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA),the molecule that encodes an organ- ism's genetic material. Watson entered the Univer- sity of Chicago when only 15,gaining his degree at 19 & doctorate at 22. From 1951 he and Francis Crick studied the structure of DNA,assisted by X- ray crystallography data from Franklin & Wilkins. In 1953 they discovered DNA's double helix struct- ure. Crick,Watson and Wilkins shared the 1962 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Watson later directed the Human Genome Project during research into human genes. Photographed in 1994 | |
