Gilbert White. Portrait of Gilbert White (1720- 93),British naturalist and clergyman. White published a classic book on his parish, the Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne (1789). This book consisted of 110 letters which White had sent to friends over a number of years. It was the first English book to focus on the habitats and lives of a wide range of mammals, birds and insects rather than purely their anatomy. Though providing some evidence for the theory of evolution, the book's main value was the inspiration and pleasure it gave to later naturalists. Written in an accessible style, the book has remained in print since its publication | |
