Ian Wilmut. British embryologist Dr. Ian Wilmut, head of the research team who cloned the world's first sheep. His research was conducted at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh,Scotland. Wilmut's work involved culturing embryonic cells from Welsh Mountain sheep. First,he produced a "cell line" of identical embryonic sheep cells. Next,a sheep egg cell had its DNA removed, and one of the embryonic cells was implanted into the egg. A spark of electricity then stimulated the egg to grow into a lamb, nourished in the womb of a surrogate sheep. In 1996,Wilmut introduced to the world two identical nine month old sheep named "Megan" and "Morag" he had cloned in this way | |
