Sir Christopher Wren. Portrait of the British architect,astronomer and mathematician Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723). He is best known as an architect,having designed the new St. Paul's Cathedral and other churches in London after the fire of 1666. Wren also lectured in astronomy at Oxford and paved the way for Newton's work with his speculation on the nature of gravity. He was a charter member of the Royal Society and rose to its presidency in 1681. He was buried in St. Paul's cathedral and his famous tablet reads: "Si monumentum requiris,circumspice"; "If you would to see his monument,look about you" | |
