Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson (b.1921),British chemist and Nobel Laureate. Wilkinson was born in Yorkshire and studied at Imperial College,London. After many years in North America,he returned to London as Professor of Inorganic Chemistry. His main work was in deducing the structure of the ferrocene complex. He showed it to be an iron atom sandwiched between two five-atom carbon rings. This was the first of a series of metallocenes that Wilkinson and others have since discovered. This work won Wilkinson a share of the 1973 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, and later a knighthood | |
