Portrait of the English physician William Withering (1741-1799). Withering graduated at the University of Edinburgh and as a keen botanist he made careful studies regarding medicinal uses of several herbs. In his An Account of the Foxglove (1785),Withering suggested that some cases of oedema, abnormal accumulation of fluid in the body tissues, could be treated using foxglove leaf extract. He was also a mineralogist and Witherite, barium carbonate, was named after him | |
