Dr Craig Venter. Dr Craig Venter, president of Celera Genomics, with DNA sequencing machines. Celera Genomics, based in Maryland,USA,is a rival of the Human Genome Project. It aims to find find the DNA sequence of all human genes by 2001. Venter is using a rapid method involving fragmentation of the DNA and the subsequent sequencing of the fragments. Supercomputers then run calculations and piece together the fragments by finding overlapping sequences. This is a cruder but faster method than that used by the publicly funded Human Genome Project. The complete human genome map will allow for improved drug design and a greater understanding of genetic diseases | |
