Alexander Todd (b.1907),later Lord Todd,British biochemist and Nobel Laureate. Todd was educated in Glasgow,graduating in 1928. He received doctorates from Frankfurt (1931) and Oxford (1933). In 1944 he was appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry at Cambridge. In a long career,he synthesised all the purine and pyrimidine bases that occur in the nucleic acids DNA and RNA,and synthesised the compounds adenosine di- and triphosphate (ADP and ATP) which are vital in the energy transfer in cells. In 1957 Todd was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry,and in 1962 was created a life peer as Baron Trumpington. Photographed in 1993 | |
