Sin-Itiro Tomonaga (1906-79),Japanese physicist and Nobel Laureate. Tomonaga spent his career in Tokyo. He was appointed professor of Physics at Tokyo University in 1941,then University President in 1956. From 1941-3 he worked on a quantum theory of the interaction between electrons and photons. He was responsible for the concept of the interaction as the exchange of virtual particles. This, with the independent work of Feynman and Schwinger, formed the basis of quantum electrodynamics; all three shared the 1965 Nobel Prize for Physics. Tomonaga is seen during the High Energy Physics Conference in Tokyo,1978. The dupes of this are cropped-in versions of the original print. The original print shows Tomonaga with his wife and physicist Robert Hofstadter | |
