Mabel Stobart,British healthcare pioneer
Mabel Annie Stobart (left,1862-1954),British healthcare pioneer,with a female colleague. Stobart was also known as Mrs St Clair Stobart. She is best-remembered for her founding of the Women's Sick and Wounded Convoy Corps. This was intended to advance women's rights by showing they could contribute in wartime. The idea originated when she was in the UK during the German invasion scare of 1907. Stobart then worked in the Balkan War (1912-1913),and the First World War (1914- 1918). This photograph,which was taken in the period from the 1890s to the 1930s,is from the Bain News Service,one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries
