Richard Schrock (born 1945),American chemist. Schrock is Professor of Chemistry at Massachusetts Institute of Technology,USA. In 2005 he shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Yves Chauvin and Robert Grubbs. In 1990 Schrock was the first to produce an efficient metal compound catalyst for metathesis. This is the process in organic chemical synthesis, discovered by Yves Chauvin, where one part of a molecule exchanges place with another to produce a new compound. The exchange requires a stable catalyst. Metathesis has been used to produce a wide variety of new compounds including new pharmaceuticals, herbicides, insect pheromones, and advanced polymers. Schrock is seen here holding a sheet of notes describing a metathesis reaction | |
