Joseph Skoda (1805-1881),Austrian doctor. Skoda pioneered the art of diagnosis, using objective observation based on physical signs that were then confirmed by autopsy. He also critically evaluated various therapeutic approaches using statistical methods,to try and eliminate those that were ineffective. Although not held in high regard in Austria, his reputation and methods were adopted throughout Europe. Skoda also insisted on prophylactic hygienic methods (for example draining Vienna's waterway) in view of the cholera and typhoid epidemics | |
