Mark Sutton,British palaeontologist, geologist and computer scientist, holding a fossil mollusc specimen. Dr Sutton, who is part of the Earth Sciences department at Oxford University,co-developed a technique for building up 3-dimensional images of fossils that cannot be extracted intact from the surrounding rock. The method involves repeated fine grinding and computer-based reconstruction methods. In collaboration with researchers from Bristol and Leicester,he created the first "virtual fossil": a detailed image of a soft-bodied mollusc that was fossilised 425 million years ago, during the Silurian period (see E442/537 & 538) | |
