Dr Mark Schattenburg,American nanotechnology researcher. Nanotechnology is the construction and manipulation of objects on the molecular scale. Schattenburg has developed methods for producing regular patterns that repeat in distances of a few nanometres (billionths of a metre). Such objects are used as gratings in astronomical telescopes, such as the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The gratings are made by scanning beam interference lithography (SBIL). The construction of devices on such small scales could also lead to smaller, faster computers and other machines.
