Matthew Sands. Portrait of the American particle physicist Matthew Sands. Sands received his BA from Clark University,USA,in 1940. He received a PhD from MIT in 1948 for work on cosmic rays. In 1950 he moved to CalTech,California,USA,to help build a synchrotron. He demonstrated the need to account for quantum effects in accelerators. From 1968-1994 he studied particle beam instabilities at various accelerators. From 1969-1985 he taught at the University of California,Santa Cruz. He is a co-author of the Feynman Lectures.
