Louis Sambon. Portrait of Louis Westenra Sambon (died 1931),Italian-British pioneer of disease transmission. Sambon studied medicine at Naples & became an assistant to Patrick Manson at the London School of Tropical Medicine in Britain. His early work on malaria led to the French & Italian governments awarding him medals. In 1900,he and a colleague tried to prove Manson's theory that malaria was transmitted by mosquitoes. They spent 3 months in a malaria-infested part of Italy but stayed uninfected by spending their nights in a mosquito-proofed hut. Sambon also showed that the tsetse fly spreads sleeping sickness and that the body louse is the carrier of typhus | |
