Charles Sherrington. 1927 portrait of the eminent English neurologist Sir Charles Sherrington (1857- 1952),who won the 1932 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine for his work on the nervous system. Sherrington's main work was on reflex motor nerve action in vertebrates. A whole range of neurological terms were coined by him,including synapse,motor unit,neuron pool and others. His book The Integrative Action of the Nervous System (1906) is a landmark in modern physiology. He was elected President of the Royal Society of London in 1920 and knighted in 1922.
