Portrait of Daniel Sennert (1572-1637) at the age of 55 from an engraving by M. Merian (1627). Sennert was Professor of Medicine at Wittenberg from 1602. His work Institutionum medicinae, published in 1611 was one of the most frequently reprinted medical texts of the 17th century. He is one of the first chemists to have adopted an atomic view of matter. He wrote "it is an art to resolve natural compound bodies into their principles of which they are made, and to make the pure and strong for medicines,or to perfect or change metals" | |
