Carlo Rubbia. Portrait of Carlo Rubbia (born 1934),Italian-American physicist. Rubbia led a team which in 1983 discovered the W and Z boson particles which mediate the weak nuclear force. This discovery helped to consolidate the electro- weak theory that unifies the electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces. The discovery was made by colliding protons and antiprotons together so that they annihilated each other with a large release of energy. Rubbia was director-general of the CERN particle physics laboratory near Geneva during 1989-93. He shared the 1984 Nobel Physics Prize. Photographed in 1994 | |
