Sarah Rowland-Jones. British immunologist Dr Sarah Rowland-jones (born 1959),researcher on AIDS and HIV immunity. She is seen in her laboratory at the Institute of Molecular Medicine,Oxford. Rowland- Jones is conducting research on AIDS in the West African state of Gambia. In Gambia she established that up to 10% of prostitutes are resistant to HIV,the virus which causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). Although these HIV resistant prostitutes (and a similar percentage in Kenya) are exposed to HIV,they show a natural immunity to the virus. Understanding the mechanisms of this immunity will enable researchers like Rowland- Jones to design future AIDS vaccines | |
