Sir Ronald Ross. Portrait of the British physician Sir Ronald Ross,1857-1932. Ross was born in India, where he returned after studying medicine in London. From 1890 he worked on malaria. He dissected large numbers of mosquitoes and finally found the parasite which is present in the blood of people with malaria. By 1900 he and others had shown that human malaria is passed by the bite of the Anopheles mosquito. Although still a major problem, control of malaria in many areas followed this knowledge of its transmission. Ross also had wide-ranging interests in poetry, fiction and mathematics. He won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1902 | |
