Portrait of Sir Robert Robinson (1886-1975),English chemist and Nobel Laureate. After obtaining his doctorate in 1910,Robinson spent three years teaching in Australia. On his return,he started his study of the alkaloids,the group of nitrogenous organic molecules (which include morphine,strychnine,cocaine and nicotine). His great success was in the determination of the structure of morphine in 1925 and that of strychnine a year later. He was knighted in 1939,and was awarded the 1947 Nobel Prize for chemistry.
