Ambroise Pare (1510-1590),French surgeon. Pare is shown here with a box of surgical tools and an embalming jar (centre right). Pare is considered one of the pioneers of surgical techniques. He gained much experience as a military surgeon on the battlefields of Italy. He introduced the use of turpentine, instead of boiling oil,to cauterise wounds, and also introduced the technique of using ligatures on arteries. In 1552,he became the royal surgeon to King Henry II of France, and served three more kings after him. Pare also published several books on anatomy and surgery.
