John Phillips (1800-1874),English geologist. Phillips went to York in 1824 to lecture in geology,where he was to stay and become keeper of the Yorkshire museum. He was active in the formation of the British Association for the Advancement of Science,becoming its first secretary in 1832. Taking a professorship in 1859 at King's College,London,he went on to publish a study of Palaeozoic fossils in Devon and Cornwall. The Geological Society appointed him president for the year 1859-1860.
