John Parkes. Portrait of Professor John Parkes, researcher of extremophile bacteria that are found underground deep below the seabed. He is seen with sediment cores taken from depths of 3000 metres whose high iron content gives them a red colour. Parkes is professor of geomicrobiology at Bristol University,UK. As part of the International Ocean Drilling Programme,he has investigated the Mid- Atlantic Ridge. Core samples taken when drilling 750 metres under the seabed (3,500m below sea level) revealed bacteria living in the rocks. These extremophile bacteria survive extreme pres- sure & temperatures of up to 170 degrees Celsius. They are being studied for their commercial uses | |
