John Polanyi. Portrait of John Charles Polanyi (born 1933),Canadian physical chemist. Polanyi studied the infrared radiation emitted during chemical reactions, allowing the distribution of energy within molecules to be observed. It also allows the events which occur during a reaction to be observed, especially any intermediate steps between the reactants and the final product. He selectively activated certain modes of molecular motion to study their effects on reaction rates. He has also written articles on science policy and the control of armaments. He won the 1986 Nobel Prize for chemistry. Photographed in 1994 | |
