Pitman's shorthand. Front page of an 1842 edition of the Phonographic Journal showing the shorthand system invented by Sir Isaac Pitman (1813- 97). Each symbol represents a word and is made up from different components which represent the phonetic elements of that word. The Journal (later known as the Phonetic Journal) was dedicated to Pitman's shorthand and its progressive improvements. Pitman's system was the first to be based on an interpretation of the sound of a language rather than how it was written. In this phonetic system, two words which sounded alike but which were normally spelt differently would be written in the same way | |
