Louis Pasteur. Engraving of Louis Pasteur (1822- 1895),French chemist and bacteriologist. Pasteur founded the science of microbiology and discovered that diseases were caused by tiny organisms transmitted from person to person. He developed vaccines against anthrax,a major disease of cattle,and rabies. Pasteur also discovered that foodstuffs,under gentle heating,could be preserved from souring.
