Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) seen conducting an immunology experiment in his laboratory, after a pencil drawing by Mucha. Pasteur made a very great contribution to the understanding of the immune response and infection both in man and in animals. In his experiments with rabid dogs,he showed that an injection of the rabies organisms produced an immunity to the disease. Later,he went on to demonstrate the temperature dependance of many disease-carrying micro-organisms,and the prevention of the spread of disease in foods by heat treatment (known as pasteurisation). This drawing is now in the Institut Pasteur,Paris | |
