Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw. View of Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw with one of her "most-perfect" magic squares superimposed. Ollerenshaw (born 1912) was educated in Oxford,England, gaining her doctorate in 1945 for work on the geometry of numbers. Her lifelong work in mathematics led to her discovery (with Professor David Bree of Manchester University,England) of the theory behind most- perfect magic squares. In these squares, each row, column and diagonal of numbers adds to the same number (30 here). Also, each 2x2 square adds to 30,and opposite partial diagonals exhibit this feature also. The missing number where her face appears is,of course,2. Photographed in 1999 | |
