Identity photos of J. Robert Oppenheimer and his wife Katherine ("Kitty"). These photos were used on ID badges issued at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project - the design and construction of the first nuclear bombs. A leading physicist,Robert Oppenheimer was the first director of Los Alamos and is often described as the "father" of the atomic bomb. After the end of the Second World War,he served with the Atomic Energy Commission. In 1953 his continued opposition to development of the hydrogen bomb led to his security clearance being revoked and the end of his government work.
