Portrait of Carl Wilhelm von Naegeli (1817-1891),German botanist. Naegeli was educated at Zurich, where he gave up medicine to study botany. He made a very careful study of pollen formation, even describing division of cell nuclei. He regarded the chromosomes as unimportant, and rejected the work of Mendel. Naegeli was a Lamarckian, believing in discrete 'jumps' in evolution rather than gradual Darwinian selection. He also did very fine work on plant growth, distinguishing between meristematic and structural plant tissue, and studies of plant ultrastructure | |
