Marie Marvingt,French aviator
Marie Marvingt (1875-1963),French aviator and mountaineer,standing next to an aeroplane. Marvingt is one of the most decorated women in the history of France. She climbed many mountains,was a record-breaking balloonist,and a pioneering aviator. She was taught to fly by Hubert Latham,and received her French flying license in 1910,only the third woman in the world to have a flying license. After World War I,she spent most of the rest of her life dedicated to setting up air ambulances. Photograph from the Bain News Service
