Colin Maclaurin. Portrait of Colin Maclaurin (1698-1746),Scottish mathematician. Maclaurin entered Glasgow University at the age of 11 and by 19 was professor of mathematics at Marischal College,Aberdeen. He developed theorems similar to Newton's but taking a geometrical rather than an analytical approach. Maclaurin's major work,published in 1720,was Geometrica organica (Organic Geometry). Maclaurin was one of the first to properly treat maxima and minima. He also added to the theory of the equilibrium of rotating bodies of fluid.
