Thomas H. Morgan. Portrait of Thomas Hunt Morgan (1866-1945),the American geneticist who developed many ideas in chromosome theory. His work in genetics was mainly performed on the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Using them,Morgan proved that the chromosome was the carrier of heredity. He provided evidence that chromosomes consist of genes that control characterisitics. He discovered the exchange of genes between chromosomes (cross-over). He proved that some genes are manifested only in one of the sexes (sex-linkage). He made the first chromosome map; this gave the relative positions of genes on a chromosome. In 1933 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine | |
