Inge Lehmann (1888-1993),Danish seismologist. Lehmann was educated at Copenhagen University, but did not receive her PhD until 1928,having pursued a career in insurance. From 1928 until retirement in 1953 she was chief of the seismological section of the Danish Geodetic Institute, responsible for the seismological stations in Greenland. Lehmann worked on earthquake data from such stations, and discovered that the inner part of the liquid core of the Earth had to be solid. She also used data from earthquakes to study other details of Earth's internal structure, finding a distinct layer at a depth of 200 kilometres | |
