John Lubbock. Coloured portrait of the English biologist and archaeologist John Lubbock,Baron Avebury (1834-1913). Lubbock studied social insects, devising a movable glass-sided container called a Lubbock nest to view them. He found that ants can recognize colours and see ultraviolet light. Lubbock was also the first to use obstacles and mazes to test their intelligence. Lubbock coined the words palaeolithic and neolithic to describe the early and late stone age respectiv- ely,and was an exponent of Darwin's ideas. In 1855 he found the first musk ox fossil in England, providing evidence of an ice age. Taken from A Modern Portrait Gallery, volume 3 (1881) | |
