Sir Norman Lockyer. Portrait of Sir Norman Lockyer (1836-1920),British astronomer and discoverer of helium. Lockyer started his career as a civil servant,later turning to astronomy. He used recently introduced methods of spectral analysis to study the Sun. He discovered an unknown element in the Sun by such spectrographic analysis,naming it helium (from Greek helios = Sun). In later life,he founded the Science Museum in London,England,and the revered scientific journal Nature which he edited for over 50 years | |
