Lev Landau. Portrait of Lev Davidovich Landau (1908-68),Russian physicist. Landau obtained his doctorate at the age of 19 and studied with Bohr and Rutherford before becoming Professor of Physics at Moscow in 1937. In 1932,after the neu- tron's discovery,he proposed the existence of neutron stars. In 1935,he devised a mathematical treatment of magnetic domains. From 1937 he worked with Kapitza on low-temperature physics. Landau studied the unusual properties of helium below a certain temperature and explained the behaviour in terms of the collective behaviour of the atoms in the liquid. For this work he was awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in physics | |
