J. Lazear. Jesse Lazear (1866-1900),a physician in the American Army and a member of the Yellow Fever Commission in Havana,Cuba in 1900. With J. Carroll and A. Agramonte,Lazear worked for Walter Reed during his trials into the transmission of yellow fever by the mosquito,Aedes aegypti. He volunteered to be exposed to mosquitos but did not contract the disease. He then worked on a yellow fever ward and accidentally caught the disease. Carroll wrote 'I shall never forget the expression of alarm in his eyes when I last saw him alive'. Tragically, his work on a yellow fever ward meant that his death could not be used as evidence of a link between mosquitos and yellow fever | |
